There is a lot of confusion regarding how to calculate the number of spell slots you get when you multiclass. This is my attempt at explaining it.

Dungeons & Dragons has a humungous library of decimating spells for its spellcasters to use in tense situations. If the goal is to inflict the most harm to an enemy possible, a wide range of spells are available to choose from many types of magic.

  • That means that they receive spells at 1/3rd of the pace of other classes, and only offer 1/3rd of a caster level if you wish to Multiclass. However, this still means your Rogue will have a decent number of 1st – 3rd spell slots, as well as one 4th.
  • Well, that depends on how you want to define “most”. If you truly mean slots, with slots being any level (I.e. A1st level slot is equal to a 9th), and don’t include cast at will spells as nearly infinite, or ritual casting, then a single class sor.
  • The names are so-called because of their contribution towards spell slots when multiclassing (PHB p. There is design space for a 'three-quarters' spellcaster. As a 3/4 spellcaster you would be able to cast up to 7th level spells, and contribute 3/4 of their levels when determining spell slots when multiclassing.
  • Critically, as a 5th level Multiclass Spellcaster, you do not have two 3rd level sorcerer slots. You have two 3rd level Multiclass Spellcaster slots - the spells you can learn are not determined by Multiclass Spellcaster slots, but by the individual classes that make up your Multiclass Spellcaster. Spells Known and Prepared:
You determine what spells you know and can prepare for each class individually, as if you were a single-classed member of that class.

Spell Slots from the “Spellcasting” class feature:
• Add together all your levels in the bard, cleric, druid, sorcerer, and wizard classes;
• If you have one or more levels in the artificer class, add half these levels (rounded up);
• If you have two or more levels in the paladin class, add half these levels (rounded down);
• If you have two or more levels in the ranger class, add half these levels (rounded down);
• If you have three or more levels in the fighter (eldritch knight) class, add one third these levels (rounded down);
• If you have three or more levels in the rogue (arcane trickster) class, add one third these levels (rounded down);
Use this total to determine your spell slots by consulting the “Multiclass Spellcaster: Spell Slots Per Spell Level” table (PHB p. 165).

Note regarding Warlocks:
Warlocks do not have the “Spellcasting” class feature. Their spells come from the “Pact Magic” class feature. You track warlock spell slots separately from any class with the “spellcasting” class feature. However, you can cast any spell that is available for you to cast form any class using any spell slot of the appropriate level on your list of available warlock spell slots.
